Kathmandu: Violence in India's northeastern state of Manipur has resulted in the death of 142 individuals in the past two months, according to the local government's announcement on Monday.

The state's chief secretary presented this information in a report to India's Supreme Court, stating that a total of 142 people have lost their lives in the violence-stricken region. The report also mentioned that since May, there have been approximately 5,000 incidents of arson, with the districts of Imphal East and Imphal West reporting the highest number of casualties.

To maintain control over the situation in the state, the report revealed that 5,995 First Information Reports (FIRs) have been filed and 6,745 individuals have been taken into custody. The local government highlighted the measures taken to preserve law and order, including the deployment of 124 paramilitary force companies and 184 Indian army columns on the ground to uphold peace.

The unrest in Manipur began on May 3 during a tribal protest concerning the inclusion of the non-tribal Meitei community in the scheduled tribe status. This status is designated for socio-economically disadvantaged groups, granting them reservations in education and government jobs. In response, authorities imposed a curfew and implemented a complete internet ban as a precautionary measure to restrict crowd mobilization. The ethnic clashes have resulted in over 3,000 injuries and the displacement of 60,000 individuals.

The state has witnessed fresh violent clashes, resulting in one fatality and two injuries on Monday, as reported by local media. Despite efforts by the federal government to restore peace in Manipur, the desired results have not been achieved thus far.
